Macroeconomics: A Survey of Laboratory Research∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
This chapter surveys laboratory experiments addressing macroeconomic phenomena. The first part focuses on experimental tests of the micro-foundations of macroeconomic models discussing laboratory studies of intertemporal consumption/savings decisions, time (in)consistency of preferences and rational expectations. Part two explores coordination problems of interest to macroeconomists and mechanisms for resolving these problems. Part three looks at experiments in specific macroeconomic sectors including monetary economics, labor economics, international economics as well-as large scale, multi-sectoral models that combine several sectors simultaneously. The final section addresses experimental tests of macroeconomic policy issues. ∗For helpful comments and suggestions on earlier drafts I thank Antoni Bosch-Domènech, Gabriele Camera, Frank Heinemann, John Kagel, Rosemarie Nagel, Charles Noussair, Andreas Ortmann, Daniela Puzzello, Alvin E. Agent-Based Computational Macroecono- mics: A Survey
While by all standards the macroeconomic system is qualified to be a complex adaptive system, mainstream macroeconomics is not capable of demonstrating this feature. Recent applications of agent-based modeling to macroeconomics define a new research direction, which demonstrates how the macroeconomic system can be modeled and studied as a complex adaptive system. This paper shall review the dev...
متن کاملDRAFT The History of Macroeconomics Viewed Against the Background of the Marshall - Walras Divide Michel
The demise of the IS-LM model and its replacement by stochastic intertemporal equilibrium models is probably the most salient change that occurred in macroeconomics during the last quarter of the twentieth century, a shift that many commentators have viewed as a Kuhnian scientific revolution. My aim in this paper is to analyse it against the background of what I call the Marshall-Walras divide....
متن کاملRational Inattention in Macroeconomics: A Survey∗
In this paper we survey recent works on rational inattention (RI) in macroeconomics within the dynamic linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) setting. We first discuss how RI affects consumption smoothness and sensitivity, precautionary savings, asset pricing, portfolio choice, and aggregate fluctuations in the univariate case. We then discuss the applications of RI to macroeconomic models of permanen...

We thank Deirdre McCloskey for e-mail discussions and, with Stephen Ziliak, for providing us with the individual scores from their 1980s survey and for the individual scores broken down by question for the 1990s survey. We thank Ryan Brady for research assistance and and the participants in the UC Davis Macroeconomics Workshop for valuable comments on an earlier draft.
متن کاملMethods of Economics: A Survey of Matters and Methods
In spite of sonic pessimistic attitudes towards methodology of economics, it has succeeded as a central theme in numerous books, refereed journals, international conferences and symposiums whose volume is increasing at an unprecedented rate. The proliferation of methodological literature also is accompanied by a proliferation of issues that concern: the goals of economics, realism of economics,...
